Silicone Free & Why It Matters

We hear all the time! So and so free this and so and so free that. We have so many products claiming to be "free-from" all kinds of different ingredients but it seems impossible to keep up with.

So which ones actually matter and make the biggest impact day to day? I get it, trust me. So let's keep it simple and talk bout just 1 ingredient that we can be aware of.

Silicone.

Silicone is a commonly used ingredient in the beauty industy for its immediate ability to give a silky feel and shine. This sounds great in theory but what is it actually doing to your hair?

The short answer: greasy hair thats prone to breakage!

What harm is it doing?

Keeps nutrients out. Since silicone puts a barrier on the strand of hair, it may block frizz but its also blocking all the other good stuff your hair needs as well.

Causes buildup. Think greasy scalp and dry brittle ends. Silicone tends to build up and since its not water-soluble it won’t wash away with that next shower!

Leads to damage. The more silicone builds up on the hair (and scalp) the more youll feel like you need to wash it. This is a vicious cycle. More washing = more styling and heat exposure. Combine this with the inability for your hair to absord nutrients and it’s a recipe for breakage.

Good news is you can detox your hair (I love the Living Proof Triple Detox Shampoo as a starter) from silicone and work your regime towards a silicone free lineup.

Being silicone-free will take some getting used to. Especially if you’re used to that slip/shine of silicone-containing products. Trust me, though, after using a silicone and sulfate free shampoo for five washes or so, you’ll experience your best hair yet.

I haven't looked back since going silicone free and I know you'll love it too.
